Travailleurs
indochinois
en Dordogne
1940-1948
🇬🇧 In 1939, when war was declared, colonial France considered it legitimate to draw on its colonies for the manpower it required. Some 20,000 Vietnamese were thus recruited, most of them by force, to work in the arms factories of metropolitan France. 4,000 of these ‘Indochinese workers’ passed through the Bergerac munitions factory.
Housed in sheds within the munitions factory, they suffered from the cold, hunger and the racist behaviour of their French commanders. Forced to work, they received no wages. These living conditions led to a mortality rate four times higher than the French average.
In 1944, the Vietnamese were moved to barracks in Creysse. Their living conditions improved, but they remained under colonial administration. They organised demonstrations to denounce their situation, but also to support the war of liberation led by Ho Chi Minh. In April 1948, the Vietnamese were loaded onto lorries and sent to the camps at Bias and Moulin-du-Lot, in Lot-et-Garonne. Most of them were repatriated one or two years later.
🇬🇧 1,200 of them were photographed in Robert Bondier’s studio in Bergerac. Thanks to the costumes lent by the photographer, these men regained, through the images, a dignity that their status as ‘indigenous’ workers had robbed them of.
